Three Boat Safety Tips
Tip 1: Do Regular, Ongoing Boat Maintenance
It goes without saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Ongoing and regular boat maintenance is essential to maintaining a well-preserved and functioning watercraft. The last thing you want is an unexpected malfunction that could have been prevented with routine maintenance. Keep to a seasonal schedule at the minimum for boat maintenance and address any concerns before they become bigger problems. Also, be sure to have your watercraft regularly inspected.
Tip 2: Have Boat Repair Products Readily Available
As a follow up to Tip 1, you’ll want to have a cache of boat maintenance and boat repair products on hand, just in the event that you need them. BoatLIFE®’s high-quality products are made for such instances, including our boat caulks and boat sealants, many of which can be used above or below the waterline for fast repairs if you ever need them. Consult the ultimate guide to the best boat sealants if you are unsure of which boat sealant to choose for the job. In addition to boat sealants, it would also be helpful to bring our Release Adhesive and Sealant Remover, Mildew Remover, and VinyLIFE Vinyl Cleaner and Protectant along for the boat ride.
Tip 3: Check your Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)
You already know that you should have one PFD for each passenger on board your vessel at all times, but did you know that PFDs should be inspected, and replaced, regularly? A good rule of thumb is to check your PFDs at the start of boating season and at the end of boating season, and periodically throughout. Make sure that no mold or mildew has accumulated on the vests. Also be sure that the clasps and enclosures are securing properly. Lastly, for inflatable life preservers, make sure that they maintain the air pressure when inflated, otherwise, they will need to be replaced. Both a visual inspection and a buoyancy inspection are critical before you head out on the water.
