Top Three Best Lakes for Boating in 2026

Lake with boat and docks

Looking into our crystal ball, we’re predicting the top three best lakes for boating in 2026. At BoatLIFE®, we know a thing or two about boating. For over 66 years, we manufacture high-quality boat cleaning, boat detailing, and boat restoration products. We also cover many miles of travel for trade shows like IBEX and other consumer-facing shows, and never miss an opportunity to get out on the water.

If you are planning any travel in the new year, here are our top three picks of the best lakes for boating in 2026.

Cayuga Lake, Finger Lakes region, NY

Over 39 miles long, Cayuga Lake is the longest of New York’s Finger Lakes and the second deepest (second to Seneca Lake) at 435 feet. Named after the indigenous people who once called the area around the lake home, Cayuga Lake is known for being a hub for outdoor recreation. Ithaca College and Cornell University, both in the city of Ithaca, are situated on the southernmost point of the lake, which is a large draw to the region. Cayuga Lake is a popular boating and fishing destination with anglers catching trout, smallmouth bass, bluegill, northern pike, and yellow perch, among other species.

Lake of the Ozarks, MO

Coming in at number four on our wishlist for winter boating and claiming a spot on this year’s top three list is the Lake of the Ozarks in central Missouri. A reservoir lake, it spans 54,000 acres in terms of its surface area, laid out in a zig-zag snakelike pattern with the main part of the lake made up of part of the Osage River stretching over 92 miles. Three other tributaries make up the smaller arms. A large boating culture exists, as well as fishing and other recreational sports.

Lake Michigan

The second largest of the five Great Lakes, Lake Michigan is a boater’s paradise. With over 22,000 square miles of surface area, Lake Michigan is the largest lake in a single country. It touches four states: Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana., as well as the Indiana Dunes National Park, and cities including Chicago, Milwaukee, and Green Bay. Many beaches also grace Lake Michigan’s shores which are popular in the warmer months of June through August. Ever-popular for boating, the Great Lake is also a sportfishing mecca. The introduction of non-native species like coho salmon, steelhead, and brown trout have fared well.
