All About The Bilge

bilge pump

What is a Marine Bilge Pump?

A bilge pump is a type of marine water pump found on both large and small ships. They are responsible for removing water accumulating in the bilge wells by pumping it overboard and back into the body of water. So, while you are on the water, it is not unusual to have water slowly collecting in your bilge well. Bilge wells are located on the bottom most part of the boat.

When should I use it?

If you have a manual, built in bilge pump, it must be turned on when you need to drain the bilge. Most helms have an on/off switch in motorized boats. In this situation, it is very important to keep an eye on the water level inside the boat and turn it on before you take off from the dock.

Why does my boat collect water in the bilge?

Water that does not drain off the side of the deck or through the scupper, and is typically caused by rough seas, excess rain or untreated leaks in the boats hull will enter the bilge well. It can also be caused by a mast drip, window leaks, condensation or hose pipes that have been compromised by rot and rust.

Why our Life Boat Bilge Cleaner is best!

Bilge water is a main cause for marine pollution. Because, untreated and dirty bilges can contain oil, gasoline, solvents, detergents and chemicals. Our Bilge Cleaner emulsifies oil and scum. It’s non-foaming, and our biodegradable formula cleans without phosphates and leaves a pleasant fragrance.
