The Importance of Waxing Your Boat

“Wax On, Wax Off!” Mr. Myogi’s famous words to Daniel Son could mean something more than just karate training. When it comes to your personal watercraft, you pour a lot of time, money, and energy into it, so why not keep your investment clean by waxing your boat? Waxing is a critical component to maintaining the overall health of your watercraft.

Importance of Waxing Your Boat

To illustrate the importance of waxing your boat on a regular basis, some of the benefits include:

Protecting Your Investment

Just like the engine and upholstery, fiberglass and its topcoat that is known as gelcoat, require regular maintenance. Waxing is the best way to ensure that your paint job lasts a long time and it protects the gelcoat from oxidation caused by harsh UV rays and environmental exposure over time. It also protects the hull from corrosive salt and other water contaminants as well as decals and graphics. Before waxing over adhesives, choose a product specifically designed for the task, like Graphix Wax®.

Making Cleaning Easier

Waxing prevents grime, algae, and marine life from adhering to the hull, which makes cleaning much easier. That is not to say that cleaning your boat will be easy, but by eradicating muck, you will be one step ahead.

Increasing Performance

Did you know that a freshly waxed hull cuts through water with less drag, increasing performance and saving on gas? So go full throttle after that wax job!

Restoring that New-Boat Luster

Waxing keeps the color of your gelcoat sparkling with like-new shine. A little prevention goes a long way when it comes to boat maintenance. If you regularly maintain the exterior of your boat, you will save on costly repairs over time.

When to Wax

When is the best time to wax? That depends on many variables including the climate where your boat is stored, and if it is stored in the water or on land. Early spring and fall are great options, whereas some boaters prefer to wax before winter storage. In any event, consider waxing at least twice a season but more if you are able. Keep in mind that watercraft with darker hulls will need more waxing, and it is recommended to do so at least 3-4 times per year.
