Charleston Welcomes Largest Container Ship

Charleston welcomed the CMA CGM Brazil, the largest container ship to dock on the East Coast, in late September 2020. The massive vessel spans 1,204 feet, roughly the equivalent of eight Statues of Liberty or two Washington Monuments laid horizontally. To top that off, it is carrying over 15,000 steel cargo containers. Learn more about the largest container ship below.

Charleston Welcomes Largest Container Ship

The Brazil sailed into the Charleston Harbor on Sunday, September 20. After overnighting at Wando Welch Terminal in Mount Pleasant, onlookers watched as it headed out to sea the next day. Along its journey, the container ship will sail for the Suez Port in Egypt before calling on its home port of Shenzhen, China. Fans can follow along its voyage on MarineTraffic.com.

Ports of Call

According to Marine Insight, French-based CMA CGM Group is the world’s fourth-largest container shipping company. Headquartered in Marseille, the company has a North American presence in Norfolk, Virginia. In a recent press release, CMA CGM is considered the top shipping company in the United States. With 470 vessels servicing 400 ports of call, its anchors up and full steam ahead for the carrier.
